WHY THIS ONE

An electric fireplace is bought for the wall it finishes, not the heat it makes. The heat is the part you use four months a year. This one installs recessed — recessed gives the flush, built-in line that reads as architecture; surface-mounting needs nothing but the fixings in the box. It is 60" wide, and a linear fireplace looks deliberate when it fills roughly two-thirds of the wall it sits on.
The flame is an LED effect that runs with or without the heater, so it works in July as easily as January. On heat it puts out 5,120 BTU. That is rated as supplemental heat for up to ~400 sq ft — enough to take the chill off a room that size, not a replacement for central heating, and we would rather say so than let you find out. Running cost is about 26¢/hour on high at 17¢/kWh.
It also produces a crackle. Sound is doing more work than most people expect: a silent fire is the detail that gives an electric unit away.
